Bioinformatics and Computational Biology
Bioinformatics and Computational Biology are disciplines born from the simultaneous progress of information technologies and bio-technologies and their application to the study of biological phenomena. They leverage on the increasing growth of available biomolecular information and bio-medical-molecular knowledge, which they significantly contribute to enhance and help to apply also in the clinic. The course aims to illustrate how computer science principles, technologies, methods and instruments can be profitably used for the computational analysis, information content increment and interpretation of biological data produced by genome sequencing, gene expression measurements and proteomics. It will be highlighted as the application to biological data of the engineering themes of data bases, information theory, data and text mining and others can contribute to increasing biomedical knowledge and improving health care.
ICT for Health Care
Information and communication technologies (ICT) are having a tremendous impact on health care research and clinical practice, and on the development of healthcare systems. The course presents computer science principles, technologies, methods and instruments for the structured collection, integration, sharing and computational analysis of clinical information and biomedical knowledge. It points out as information and knowledge engineering can profitably support the effective management of medical, clinical and biomolecular data, and contribute to extract their valuable information content toward improving biomedical knowledge and health care. Students will build knowledge on issues related to bio-medical-molecular data and clinical information, and will develop skills on ICT instruments enabling the interoperability and development of applications to manage and process such data and information; this will make them able to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the increasing ICT development and relevance in the health care.

Bioinformatics Algorithms
Bioinformatics is an increasingly important and interesting area of computer science application. This discipline was born from the growing need in Molecular Biology to develop adequate computational tools for the resolution of multiple problems, including those derived from the analysis of biological sequences (DNA, RNA, proteins). In particular, the recent biotechnologies of next generation sequencing enable to generate precise, but also very big, data of biological sequences, which raise complex problems and require specific algorithms for their effective and efficient processing and computational analysis. The course aims to introduce the students to such problems and to their computational solution, with the main goal to provide the algorithmic knowhow to successfully face both the study and the efficient solution of a variety of problems regarding sequences, trees and graphs in Bioinformatics. It will develop the skills to design exact or approximated algorithms for the solution of optimization problems regarding sequences, trees and graphs which are used to solve Bioinformatics problems, and the ability to use software available in the Internet for the study of biological sequences.
